Verdea – The wine of Zante

Despite the small size of Zakynthos, many dozens of native grape varieties have been cultivated for centuries.Verdeais one of them.

It is a traditional multi-varietal white winethat owes its name to the Italian “verde”, meaning “green”,referring to the color of the unripe grapes that increase the wine’s acidity. Verdea made its appearance at the beginning of the 19th century and has been identified with the island’s subsequent winegrowing history ever since.

Traditional Verdea is a high alcohol, dry wine, that gives a strong sense of aging, reminiscent of sherry, because ofits maturing in oak barrels. Without losing its traditional character, contemporaryVerdeais amber in color and fruity aromas, witha fresh and piquant taste.

More than ten varieties are used in its blend, the main of them being: Skiadopoulo, Pavlos, white Robola, Goustolidi, and Avgoustiatis.

Verdea was the favorite wine of the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos.

Ideally, it should be combined with fish, white meat, pasta and cheese.

Cheers !!!
