Capodistrias Museum

The prominent personality of the Corfiot count Ioannis Capodistrias, first governor of Greece and top European diplomat is revealed here, in the only museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Ioannis Capodistrias, to the great Corfiot, Greek, and European politician of the 19th century. Ioannis Capodistrias is linked with the vision and struggles for peace in Europe and the establishment of the Greek State as he was the first Governor of Greece.
The museum is housed in the heritage monument of Koukouritsa, Capodistrias’ family country estate, situated near the village of Evropouli, just 7km from Corfu town.
The permanent exhibition displays important artefacts and documents of historical significance, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the history of Corfu, and the history of Greece through the life of the first Governor of Greece.
The Museum’s history in itself is directly linked with an exceptional figure, that of Maria Capodistria – Desylla, great-granddaughter of the Governor’s youngest brother, and Mayor of Corfu from 1956 to 1959 (she was, in fact, the first woman in Greece ever to be elected to the Mayor’s office).
At the Museum’s lush hilltop garden visitors can explore Corfu’s countryside with uninterrupted views over the island. In the garden, visitors can also enjoy the Museum Cafe and various cultural summer events.
